Censorship — What it is and why it should end.

David Usoro

Though the main motive of censorship may not be inhumane, from what we’ve experienced in modern times, it’s obvious that in the process of solving the problem of indiscriminate comments and offensive content more problems have been created.

The term “censorship” is very broad, in this article we’ll consider the elements of censorship and how it affects our modern communication especially with social media gaining the spotlight. But first, let’s take a surface step around censorship so we properly understand what it entails.

What is Censorship?

With reference to the Cambridge dictionary, censorship is the action of preventing part or the whole of a book, film, work of art, document, or other kinds of communication from being seen or made available to the public, because it is considered to be offensive or harmful, or because it contains information that someone wishes to keep secret, often for political reasons.

Clearly from this definition, it’s right to conclude that to a large extent, censorship has helped in curbing the occurrence of offensive statements, also saving very confidential information.

The Rise in Internet Censorship

In an attempt to protect users from harmful images, videos, and messages, censorship came to be. Many internet users complained of being uncomfortable with the content put up on social media, resulting in a call from the platform owners to put a stop to offensive content.

In solving this, other secondary issues arose. For example, some users have their social media accounts permanently banned or temporarily suspended as a result of actions put in place to stop the spread of offensive content. In full consideration, this act defeats the whole aim of social media which is supposed to be user-friendly instead of favoring one party over another.

To consider the modern effect of censorship, a situation of personal expression regarding the overall effect on society. The positives of censorship favor only a certain set of people while the other party is left with little or no access to information important to them. An example of this one-sidedness: censorship protects children from accessing harmful and inappropriate information. This is true and it’s a positive feature of censorship. On the other hand, the internet is a free business driver, most startups need a place where they can promote their businesses freely. Internet censorship has devastating consequences for local businesses, potentially locking them out of economic opportunities. From the above illustration, we see that censorship favors one part of society while the other part is left devastated.

Why should there be a stop to these…

The internet should not be a thing of only the elites. For such a big infrastructure as the internet, it’s fairly inappropriate to have only a small sector of the world control it and the information in it. Also, these centralized authorities may be sentimental in their sense of judgment and operation, they may be a situation wherein an action on the internet is taken based on political or religious ties.

The foundations of the internet should be the users, and the users should be the ones in control and in charge of decision-making since they are the primary consumers of the internet. A centralized internet space shows no user-friendliness and this particular point discourages a lot of people from the internet.
